Following a wonderful evening of Chinese cuisine...music with fabulous Liz Coulliard, was time to chill...patrons having left..Tim sat, chatted with Pat Coulliard for awhile. Several tables just beg being drawn on...and folks will find chalk actually on some of the tables for just that reason.

Not only are we bringing back a gastronomical feast... but we are
bringing back creative, tasty tidbits that will astound you... This
delight.... will more than amuse you.... This is not our usual
(wonderful) fare... this exceeds!!!!

All of this at a more than reasonable price.....

We are off harvesting Dungeness Crab and other delights from the sea
today, so before we mortgage our first born for claws... we want to get
a 'kind of' head count... to insure that we will not have harvested in
vain... or too little.

So if we could perhaps see a show of emails... (it won't be written even
in jello) just to get a ballpark estimate...

Billy McGlaughlin Dinner/Concert...a Rousing Success!!!

We'll add a few more pictures as I get them...but what a wonderful event...having guitarist/performer and song writer Billy McLaughlin here at the Big Easel performing for an intimate, personal and dare I say very fortunate those advanced reservation ticket holders. A high bar and exciting precedence was set for our NE Wisconsin area, the arts are showing their colors...thriving, growing...

Billy first entertained, and spoke some amazing encouraging words, insightful truths about not giving up, going after your dreams...sharing his rebirth from Focal Dystonia...with the high school student body of both Wabeno and Laona High School. You know such an event was amazing when the students thereafter thank organizers for bringing in and putting together such an assembly!

Then patrons of the Big Easel Bistro and Gallery were blessed with two long sets, Billy taking us all on an aesthetic journey in sound and mood. I took video of one of my favorite of Billy's songs, "Helms Place"...and here for recapturing the joy of those that attended, and those wondering what you missed is that video. Billy's reviews include the Chicago Sun Times, the Billboard's Top 10 list, and Biography that you must read. An innovative performer and composer, coming to us from Minnesota. I (Larry Seiler) had the distinct pleasure seeing Billy perform last year at Nicolet College Theater of Arts auditorium.

Billy, will be addressing students at Wabeno High School in an assembly early Friday afternoon. Then that evening, a limited audience of 30 reserved ticket holders will be treated to the finest of cuisine at the Big Easel Gallery, (drinks separate), and a concert by artist, Billy McLaughlin.

Labor Day Weekend

Busiest dining crowd yet was this past Saturday at Big Easel Gallery, folks enjoying an African cuisine, then pizza nights....and music from John "JJ" Jenkins, and Larry Seiler on Friday and Saturday, then John, Larry and local Pat Lowery, each taking turns with twenty minute sets repeated on Sunday.

and then...to end Saturday night off...Larry finished his set with two delightful young girls (Ava and Emily) giving it a go, Larry sitting on the cajon (percussion acoustic drum)...and was much fun!!!

Things continue to escalate and take momentum, in without a question one of north woods most intriguing art cultured experiences. What was a well kept secret...has been getting out, and things have been hoping with patrons and enthusiasm. On Fridays and Saturdays, Tim and Connie Friesen and staff are found dishing up panini's, special dishes, breads...and various wines. Time of about 11am to 4:30pm...and quite often patrons are treated to various music performances, who perform for tips. Some musicians have CD's for sale, or for donation.

An addition to the center room is a sample bread tasting table! Taste...and then buy a loaf to take home!!!

Of course many are already with the main bistro area dining room...filled with arts and wonderful aesthetic senses to enjoy in dining pleasures!

While dining, from the third room you'll enjoy the wafting of good music in the air...but you'll want to then move on over to find seating and relax, enjoy another great cup of espresso or latte, or perhaps unwind and enjoy a glass of your favorite wine while viewing and enjoying the music!!! And...dining room...bread tasting room, or the 'chill and fill' room all carry many works of area artists for your visual delights. Perhaps you'll want to purchase, or even rent to buy...or just take in and enjoy.

The third 'chill and take fill' room includes a wonderful cozy bar for ordering coffees and favorite beverages! Enjoy a rich full aesthetic experience!!!

Consortium Artist Larry Seiler, wonderful time in Alaska!

Larry and his wife, Debbie...returned after twelve days in the Anchorage, Wasilla, Palmer and Willow areas of Alaska...there to teach two plein air painting workshops. A wonderful time was had by all, and plans are already in the works for two, possibly three workshops in Alaska next year! Stay tuned for future information!

Richeson Wisconsin Plein Air Exhibition

Consortium artist/member Larry Seiler, is one of 28 Wisconsin artists that has been accepted into the Jack Richeson Wisconsin Plein Air Exhibition...hosted by the Bergstrom-Mahler Art Museum in Neenah, Wisconsin July 9th - September 18th

Plein air, is a French term meaning "in the open air" or paintings that are executed set up on location outdoors. In the tradition of the early Impressionists of France...and the long traditions of landscape and figure painters.

These three works were accepted into the exhibition-

Larry, will also be participating in a Richeson sponsored plein air event known as a "paint out" which is a growing and exciting trend throughout the country. Plein air painters converge on an area of set boundaries, and over several days to a week's time paint scenes and settings. Panels or canvases are stamped the mornings of each paint day so that no paintings in advance could be part of the shows end.

Itinerary as follows-
August 4th, painters will converge on Brown County and Outagamie Counties; the 5th in Winnebago and Calumet Counties; the 6th, the cities of Appleton and Neenah/Menasha...

Completed works will be framed by the artists, then set up for display at Begstrom-Mahler between 2-3pm for an end show and sale...4pm-7:30pm

Johanna Axelrod- Featured Consortium Artist

Last night was another fun filled event, the featured artist Johanna Axelrod and her wonderful watercolors took over the gallery floor space at the Big Easel Gallery in Wabeno. Friends, guests, and art patrons visited throughout the evening...foods, beverages and live music performed made the event a memorable one for everyone involved. Nice show, and congratulations Johanna...!

*whew...! I'm sure many know what is involved once that decision to add pages, update, prep images to your website is made...not to mention dusting off the ole "html" knowledge base...and while not completely finished, am happy to announce finally the site is worthy once more to represent me and my work!

Old school design to some degree, but the time to learn fancy java scripting and all that is possible just doesn't fit with the irons in my fire right now. I have added several "recent" plein air pages now, several in-studio painting pages as well, introduced a link for my portraits and figures. The first page of the recent plein airs has the hyperlinks working to bring up larger image views with descriptions, and takes me about 1-1/2 hours to do one whole page of this...so will reserve time another day to work on finishing all that, but do hope my friends and visitors will take a moment to check it out.

Sure we'll get some more pictures, but here are a few to prime pump start...great food..glasses of cheer, warm and friendly folks...

Chatting with folks recently aware of our events and presence last night too...came as an opportunity once more to share the vision, and reference to the growing popularity on the East and West coasts...where artists more and more are setting up public events or special guests (usually means paying to attend) at their own homes, apartment or studio flats, and so forth. Even well known musician's throwing together an evening's gig...guest performers showing up incognito, plenty of food and fun. A unique "dang...shoulda been there" thing...and I believe that is definitely the sentiments shared again and again.

Once more, the hap hap happenin' place to be in NE Wisconsin proved to be in Wabeno on this Saturday event, from 3pm to 7pm...with great foods, spirits, cheer, and fine art works from the consortiums growing number of artists. Featured for this event was Dale Keller, art instructor for Wabeno and his very fine pottery...

There were many fine set ups of Dale's work throughout the home of Tim and Connie Friesen, or what I like to call the "Art House"...and here to follow a few more-

Word of the event and events has been spreading, thru this blog...word of mouth, and postcards produced by Dale...and attendance was fantastic!

...and weather was fine enough that patrons enjoyed the porch and steps environment as well...talking art and catchin' up on everything exciting!

...and as typical, you never know what kind of music will be on hand, more and more musicians showing up...bringing instruments, from an ebo bass...dulcimer, guitars, cajon, djembe...on and on...festive in the traditions of world music...

Next Soiree event will feature artist Connie Friesen, her many works including the floorscapes that are gaining a lot of notoriety and attention...visit back for updates and information!

Weekend Plein Air Workshop...with Larry Seiler

Steve Beaubien, from Park Rapids, MN...drove nearly 370 miles this past weekend to take one on one instruction with Larry, spending Saturday at Strong Falls in Goodman Park, and Sunday at Long Slide Falls in the morning, finishing at Piers Gorge in the afternoon.

The event started really with a wonderful dinner at Tim and Connie's...and Steve is shown here to the far near right (blue striped shirt) with that really "happy to be here" look. And he was!

Here Steve painting at the base of Long Slide Falls...about a 220 yard trek down hill carrying a good bit of gear, walking sticks certainly helped!

so...what do artistic types do in their supposed FREE time? What??? As if creativity were like a faucet one could just turn off or on?

So...I go over to Tim and Connie's one day...and they had just gone to some local area where clay was literally in the ground and brought a bunch home. I hear the news they are building an outdoor earth oven...planning to make pizzas and breads.

Okay...I'm not thrown for a curve, because well...isn't this what one comes to expect hanging around artsy friends??? As an artist/musician type myself, I totally connect...so instead I'm like..."really? Wow...!!! Cool!!! So...how will this work???"

So...if you follow our blog of the arts that happen here in the north woods of Wisconsin, I wonder how many have one day just decided to get a bunch of clay and build an outdoor oven? One thing is sure...one connects with a long history of many indigenous cultures doing something like this!!!

Sand is used to help create the shape...and clay is packed over it...later the sand all removed...which I believe Connie is seen working on here, leavng a nice clay shell.

A couple more pics added here...the bread is phenomenal, and Tim is on to a great flour/recipe...first getting the fire good and hot, about an hour Tim says, roughly 450-500 degrees...

The bread has wonderful texture, and is amazingly good, just about better than any I can recollect...and to think, from a mound of clay!!!

Flying Pig Gallery Greenspace- Plein Air event...

Yesterday proved to be most interesting and worth the near 300 mile round trip, to the The Flying Pig Gallery & Greenspace

....located in Algoma, Wisconsin...at the base of the peninsula thumb that juts out dividing two bodies of water meeting at the tip, the bay of Green Bay, and Lake Michigan. Algoma, is nestled along the west shores of Lake Michigan. Celebrated artist/designer Susan Murtaugh and a number of digital artists converged upon the gallery space with ipods and ipads in hand...digitally painting plein air.

Steve Wysocki and myself, received invitation as did a number of other traditional painters of plein air, to attend...set up and paint. Steve has a number of works on exhibit at the Flying Pig Gallery, as well as does our very own Connie Friesen with her floorscapes.

Three Weekend Dates- Plein Air Workshop at Goodman County Park

Consortium member, Larry Seiler is offering three weekend plein air workshops here in our NE Wisconsin area, and you might consider taking one of the summer workshops...but then coming back for the color of the October fall season! Those dates are July 24-25; Aug 21-22; and Oct 9-10

Our workshop location- Goodman County Park...here, as described by the county park department-

Goodman Park has a 15-site campground on the Peshtigo River in the heart of the Marinette County Forest. The campground has firewood for sale, vault toilets, a dump station, and a potable water tower for campers. Water is also available at a hand pump. A large group campsite is available by reservation. Also available by reservation is an enclosed, log day use lodge and a cabin available for overnight stays.

Easter at the Friesens...

We had a wonderful time, once more we many

gathering at the home and good graces of Tim

and Connie. Wonderful food, bit of music,

laughs and cheer...

Quite unexpected...the Easter Bunny paid us

a visit...but, geez, this one was spoutin'

and spewin' venom. Apparently not happy with

his union rep, having to work on the holidays

and so forth. Certainly one bad a-- bunny!

He was just tossin' eggs around, here..there

no need to hunt for them. Heck...you had

to look out and dodge them!!!

And if you thought the white rabbit fast in Alice in Wonderland, I had a heck of a time just trying to get a camera on this character!!!

And...as quick as he had appeared,he was out

the door...complainin'...threatening once more

to get even with his union rep!

Crazy...where do they get such bunnies

On a later, calmer note...following dinner...Tim is

caught cradling, enjoying the finer moments of life

WAC Brings in the New Year!

Once more...whatever the cause, artists and friends gathering together at Tim and Connie's are in for a fun, and aesthetically memorable time. This time to welcome in the New Year, and festive it was...earlier in the day snowshoeing or cross country skiing around the property!

Folks enjoyed a banter of food and delicacies, drink and cheer, and good lively discussions!

And...to kick off the official evening, of course...we are all treated to a play featuring Connie Friesen and Liz Couillard!!! How wonderful it was...!

Then...its time to relax and drum up a bit of music...and welcome the New Year in...

The evening led to a bonfire outdoors (dern...no pics?)...and Vince, Jaimoe and crew lighting off fireworks...

Amazing night...and all of us in the Wabeno Arts Consortium wish those visiting our blog, connected with our soiree the best in this new year, prosperous...good health, and joy!

There is a trend happening...I saw it in New York...heard about it on the west coast, and now you are reading more and more on the internet. Really...a timeless idea of artists, musicians performing in small venues, right there in private homes! Mozart was well known for his parlor concerts...

But...perhaps the 60's...large music festivals, the idea grew that really good musicians, great experiences had to happen on a large scale. The changes in the economy are forcing many artists to rediscover the roots to how creatives in the past went about efforts to perform and become known. I have to tell you...when I was out in New York, I found out...that had I arrived the evening before I would have been treated to an evening at a house concert where Levon Helm and Howard Johnson were playing. (Ask me about Howard sometime...as we are related!). Well...turns out Eric Clapton showed up incognito and then just sat in and played. People paid about $100 each to attend, and were surprised and treated to this laid back unforgettable event. FWIW...I wouldn't have had to pay anything...dang!

Well...we certainly can learn and cultivate these unique events where those finding themselves fortunate to attend are willing to pay a bit more for the intimate and uniquely personal setting. Not just for music...but for our art as well.

An Endorsement...Great Baking Dish by Dale Keller!

I recently acquired one of Dale Keller's fine hand thrown pottery, a baking dish with lid. Dale is one of our artists in our consortium group (see link to Dale's blog), and just want to report what a very fine baking dish it is. My wife and I enjoyed perhaps one of our tastiest home cooked chicken two nights ago!

All I did was place the pieces of chicken in the dish, added a bit of water to the bottom, and applied my seasonings. The dish circulates the juices within itself, as Dale explained it to me. Collecting on the lid by heat and returning to the chicken below. Was wonderful...and being ceramic and a bit on the heavier side, it retains its heat after serving by replacing the lid...and when ready for a second portion its contents remain good and warm!

I'm already looking forward to trying this dish with salmon steaks, venison...you name it. A great addition to our cookery here in the Seiler household!

Artists and friends, patrons of the arts gathered from
as far away as Appleton, Rhinelander, Newald...and
Armstrong Creek in NE Wisconsin, at the home of
Tim and Connie Friesen, as part of the newly formed
guild, the Wabeno Arts Consortium. Bringing all manner
of art forms together such as welded sculpture, rugging,
poetry, soaps and essential oils, batik, paintings from
unique floor coverings, landscapes and plein air, and
very fine pottery.

Artist/musician Larry Seiler played guitar during the
two day event, and a number of very fine musicians
celebrated the end of the second day with the traditional
jam session. The event was well attended with great
expectations expressed by the public to see such
things grow and receive greater attention. To that end,
we members of the consortium do heartily agree!!!

Participants for this first open house event included-
Steve Wysocki- (paintings), Elizabeth Coulliard- (book of poetry),
Mary Margaret- (batik), Jim Koch- (welded sculptures),
Connie Friesen- (paintings & floor coverings), Larry
